1. SENSORY MATHEMATICS

A nice activity to work with very young learners in the area called "Sensory mathematics"

Hide the mouse:

Hello! With this page, I start to set different pages to work on different areas of the infant curriculum through the English language.

The aims of this activity are:
  • To develop colour recognition with reference to the seven colours of the spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
  • To practise matching colours to a sensory standard.

SPELLING

SPELLING:
We based our spelling activities in this book called "The Grammar Handbook 1" by Sara Wernham and Sue Lloyd.

Spelling 1: "sh".

MAIN POINT:
Revise the "sh" spelling of the /sh/ sound. With the children, make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make up sentences, using some of the words. The words could also be written onto a big fish shape, which might then be used as a word bank for display.

Spelling 7 & 8: Short Vowels.

MAIN POINT:
Revise the short vowel sounds: /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/. The children can "count" them on their fingers, starting with the thumb for /a/. Many spelling rules relate to the short vowel sounds. The children need to be able to identify the vowel sounds in words, and to know which ones are short. Use a box and a puppet (mouse) to help them listen for the short vowel sounds:

For /a/, put the puppet at the side of the box. For /e/, make the puppet wobble on the edge of the box. For /i/, put the puppet in the box. For /o/, put the puppet on the box. For /u/, put the puppet under the box.

Call out the short vowel sounds for them to put the mouse in the correct place.

GRAMMAR

THE GRAMMAR HANDBOOK 1:
We based our grammar activities in this book called "The Grammar Handbook 1" by Sara Wernham and Sue Lloyd.
The Grammar Handbook 1 is designed to follow The phonics Handbook. It is intended to:
  •  Introduce the rudiments of grammar.
  • Teach spelling systematically.
  •  Improve vocabulary and comprehension.
  •  Reinforce the teaching in The Phonics Handbook, and
  •  Extend the children’s phonic knowledge.

-
-
The teaching is multisensory, active and progresses at a challenging pace. It is especially suitable for young children. Each part of speech, for example, is taught with its own action and colour. The actions enliven the teaching, and make the learning easier. The colours, which are useful for identifying parts of speech in sentences, match those used by Montessori Schools.
The Grammar Handbook 1 provides all the essential teaching ideas, and I develop 13 tasks during this term in low and high tech:
Here I show you my grammar activities.

Grammar 1: Rainbow Capitals.

AIM:
Develop the children's ability to recognise and write capital letters. Develop their knowledge of the alphabet.
Knowing the alphabet is the first step towards being able to use word books, dictionaries and thesauruses.

Grammar 5: Proper nouns.
AIM:
Develop the children's understanding that there are different types of words, and that each type has a special name.
Proper nouns are the names given to particular people and places, and to months and days of the week.

PHONICS

Phonics:
In this area of the subject we use the seven “Jolly Phonics Workbook”. Jolly phonics workbooks teach the skills for reading and writing.
These workbooks are an excellent way of introducing students to all the letter sounds of English, not just the alphabet. The teaching is multisensory, with each sound having a simple story, an action, and a large letter with arrows for students to trace with their finger. Engaging exercises and fun activities show students how to use the letter sounds to read and spell regular words, along with ways to learn more “tricky” spellings. Each of the seven workbooks helps students develop their phonic skills further, moving from simple letter-sound recognition and letter formation early on to using alternative spellings of the vowel sounds in the later books.

In each group I follow the same procedure* when I plan my phonics’ activities.
1. FLASHCARDS
2. ACTION + SONG
3. ACTIVITIES
4. WRITING
5. GAMES
These are the resources for all sounds combining low and high tech. Besides this, I have more resources for each group where I can put into practice more activities related to the whole group.
*I have a more detailed explanation in the teaching sequence of each group.
