Phonics:
In this area of the
subject we use the seven “Jolly Phonics Workbook”. Jolly phonics workbooks
teach the skills for reading and writing.
These workbooks are
an excellent way of introducing students to all the letter sounds of English,
not just the alphabet. The teaching is multisensory, with each sound having a
simple story, an action, and a large letter with arrows for students to trace
with their finger. Engaging exercises and fun activities show students how to
use the letter sounds to read and spell regular words, along with ways to learn
more “tricky” spellings. Each of the seven workbooks helps students develop
their phonic skills further, moving from simple letter-sound recognition and
letter formation early on to using alternative spellings of the vowel sounds in
the later books.
In each group I
follow the same procedure* when I plan my phonics’ activities.
1. FLASHCARDS
2. ACTION + SONG
3. ACTIVITIES
4. WRITING
5. GAMES
These are the
resources for all sounds combining low and high tech. Besides this, I have more resources for each
group where I can put into practice more activities related to the whole group.
*I have a more detailed explanation in the teaching sequence of each group.
