SPELLING

SPELLING:
We based our spelling activities in this book called "The Grammar Handbook 1" by Sara Wernham and Sue Lloyd.

Spelling 1: "sh".

MAIN POINT:
Revise the "sh" spelling of the /sh/ sound. With the children, make a list of words which use it. Then ask them to make up sentences, using some of the words. The words could also be written onto a big fish shape, which might then be used as a word bank for display.

Spelling 7 & 8: Short Vowels.

MAIN POINT:
Revise the short vowel sounds: /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/. The children can "count" them on their fingers, starting with the thumb for /a/. Many spelling rules relate to the short vowel sounds. The children need to be able to identify the vowel sounds in words, and to know which ones are short. Use a box and a puppet (mouse) to help them listen for the short vowel sounds:

For /a/, put the puppet at the side of the box. For /e/, make the puppet wobble on the edge of the box. For /i/, put the puppet in the box. For /o/, put the puppet on the box. For /u/, put the puppet under the box.

Call out the short vowel sounds for them to put the mouse in the correct place.
